We had our assessment for kete 2 today. Aside from a typical "oh that's what the instructions said" headsmack moment, I did fine. Kete 3 arrived about 10days ago, but I decided to leave it until this kete was wrapped. Time to get cracking!
the liminal
I have continued to pluck away at my Duolingo and Memrise and Māori Made Easy work. The folks affiliated with Motherfócloir have started giving us Duolingo homework again--which is great, except the homework does not have an aligned lesson about what is being learnt (and assessed). This week's was absolute objects. I could probably figure … Continue reading the liminal
gaelige + eurovision = squee
This morning I was listening to podcasts whilst doing my scullery. This week's episode of Motherfócloir opened with a faux Eurovision voting sequence and a brief discussion of the Contest. I was going to fansplain that, in fact, Ireland's most recent victory was in 1996 (rather than 1994). But then Darrach and his ilk wouldn't've … Continue reading gaelige + eurovision = squee
wanderings in the desert
My work in Irish and Māori this week has been a struggle. A sort of winter torpor has set in. There's also some stuff happening work-wise that is not helping me find focus. It's just one of those trudging phases, I guess. It is what it is.
kotahi eejit
Have been whacking around in Memrise Māori a fair bit this week. Not the best interface and paying for access hasn't improved it. Mostly I'm using it to drill (on a supplementary basis) things like counting. My nemesis. *throwscomputeragainstfireplace* OK, not really...just metaphorically. Am now quite out of the molasses phase of learning Irish and … Continue reading kotahi eejit
kete 2
Today I wrapped up the assessment book for kete 2. This kete had more scripts (3) and the pacing of things has accelerated. But that's a good thing: there's been enough to do that some of it is sticking. Using Memrise is proving to be an excellent accompaniment--to an extent that I've paid for a … Continue reading kete 2
More reo. And irish. But more reo
I am slowly whacking my way through @TeWananga 's PapaReo (kete 2). In fact, I've finished the workbook and will shortly complete the assessment book. It's accelerated a fair bit from kete 1, which works for me. When learning a language I need a fair bit of intensity for anything to stick. Until recently, little … Continue reading More reo. And irish. But more reo
rhymes with hottie
In my endeavours to be post-guilt, I received a box of Māori Made Easy materials in the post last week. This is designed to be a secondary strategy for learning the reo, as a supplement to my Wānanga course. There is a multimedia component available online, with a series of YouTube audio files. All thanks … Continue reading rhymes with hottie
Decolonization as emotional work
The last couple of days have been a struggle. Not (merely) with respect to my language learning: in a much broader sense the black dog has been stalking me since Thursday. Yesterday (Friday) the fucker fairly chewed on me for most of the day...the nurturing salve of tacos for dinner didn't have its usually healing … Continue reading Decolonization as emotional work
Shit’s about to get real(er)
In today's post: All the books (Source: John P Egan) I need to up my game with respect to the reo, so I'm moving beyond my Wānanga course. Which is great on its own terms, but I need to use more differentiated instruction and self-regulated learning strategies. I need to do more.
